Sublime Video Player Out of Beta!

A well designed player for a well designed platform.

We’ve been using the Sublime Video Player in its beta stages for months now and we love it. The Sublime Video Player is a beautifully designed, cross platform video player, that works in both Flash and HTML 5 . As HTML5 video and mobile usage gain popularity, we think it’s important to assure that your content works well on as many platforms as possible. Go check out the Sublime Video Player for yourself on our demo or on their demo site.

54% of Video HTML5 Compatible

According to media search site MeFeedia, over half half of all video in their index is now available for playback in HTML5. It seems the biggest factor for such rapid growth is mobile video. H.264 video is the number one format for the major mobile platforms and many of large videos sites are providing video player embeds inside an frame, allowing the browser to detect and playback the video on all different devices. It seems that the lack of Flash support on popular mobile platforms is starting to have a significant on the way video is presented on the web.

In brief:

  • 54% of web video is for available for in HTML5.
  • Support for HTML5 video has doubled over the past 5 months.
  • Mobile video can be credited for the massive surge in popularity, with H.264 being the most popular format for mobile devices.
  • Flash still remains the most popular desktop format.

MeFeedia’s survey was based on its index of video content from over 33,000 publishers including media sites such as Hulu, CBS, and ABC, as well as hosting sites such as YouTube and Vimeo. Only videos using the “video” tag were counted.

How web video powers global innovation

Here is a great TED talk given by Chris Anderson on how the rise of web video has enabled a global phenomenon he calls “Crowd Accelerated Innovation.” It delivers a fascinating look into how video has inspired millions, and how those millions have in turn given rise to a superior form of innovation since they can now share their innovations much faster than they could either through the written word, or imagery.

“It’s not too much to say that what Gutenberg did for writing, online video can now do for face to face communication. So, that primal medium, which your brain is exquisitely wired for… that just went global.” — Chris Anderson

Sublime Video is just about here…

Good news today! Sublime Video is now in a public beta. As soon as we can get our hands on the code we’ll be getting it integrated into MediaCore as it definitely looks like the nicest HTML5 to Flash fallback player out there.

Joining the Open Video Alliance

MediaCore has been added to the list of content management systems that are officially part of the Open Video Alliance.

What is Open Video?

As internet video matures, we face a crossroads: will technology and public policy support a more participatory culture—one that encourages and enables free expression and broader cultural engagement? Or will online video become a glorified TV-on-demand service?

Open Video is a movement to promote free expression and innovation in online video through open standards, open source, and open content.
