MediaCore added to MetaBridge Top 15

Earlier this week Metabridge announced that MediaCore has been nominated to their list of top 15 Canadian startups to connect top tech startups in Canada to California’s Silicon Valley through a series of targeted events and an annual premier retreat. We’re thrilled to be joining the ranks of some awesome startups representing Canada and are looking forward to the coming months.

There’s a terrific list of VIP’s coming to the event, and we’re very grateful to the Metabridge team for putting such a quality event together.

The affect of internet connectivity on education

This morning I came across a rather interesting quote from the founder of Netflix, discussing the future of education and how high bandwidth connectivity will play a substancial role in it. What’s interesting is that this really resonates with a lot of what we’re seeing in terms of people now teaching with video as a central focus, and certainly as these higher bandwidth connections become more commonplace the acceleration of video being used prominently in education will skyrocket.

“It turns out that all Netflix streaming peak on Saturday night can fit inside a single fiber optic, which is the size of one human hair. That’s because the physics of fiber optic are so amazing. And that’s why I’m so convinced that we’re at the very beginning of a multi-decade explosion in bandwidth connectivity and in all the things that become the substrate for all of you to build incredible education businesses.”

MediaCore nominated for 2 tech awards

The VIATeC Technology Awards will celebrate the achievements of technology companies and individuals responsible for making Victoria (one of our two office locations) the fastest growing technology region in British Columbia with over $2.65BN in revenue this year (Go Canada!).

We’re really looking forward to the awards ceremony this year as we’ve been nominated for two technology awards in the following categories:

New feature: The HTML5 player

For months we’ve been working behind the scenes on creating what we consider to be the next great leap forward for the video player experience inside of MediaCore. Starting today every account will receive our new and improved HTML5 and Flash player experience.

What’s new:

HD switching – You can now toggle between high definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) within the player.
Full screen everywhere – You can now full screen the player in both Flash and HTML5. We also have made it possible to full-screen inside embed codes that MediaCore automatically generates.
Instant-on – When you press play you’ll notice that video content immediately plays. Our advanced caching techniques have now significantly boosted playback speed and as a result users will no longer have to wait for content to playback.
HTML5 audio player - When you upload an audio file to MediaCore, you now see a beautifully designed audio player when you play it back.
Seamless HTML5 to Flash fallback - Users will no longer be able to perceive the difference between the HTML5 and Flash player experience. We’ll automatically detect which browser they are using and present them with either the HTML5 player or the Flash player depending on what their system supports.

This is just the start of many updates that we have in the development pipeline, so stay tuned for regular weekly releases. Big things are coming.

MediaCore wins at Demo Day 2012

On March 8, we were one of the lucky participants at Demo Day 2012 hosted by BCTIA and the Centre4Growth. It gave BC tech companies (and SaaS companies – like us!) the unique chance to demo their ground breaking products to over 100 senior executives from some of the largest corporations and institutions doing business in the province of British Columbia.

New feature: Media management library

Since the launch of MediaCore, we’ve had over 3,000 organizations using our product and we’ve received a lot of feedback on the challenges of managing and organizing very large media collections. Today we’re announcing our new media library with the goal to make managing your large video or audio collection a breeze.

Here’s a larger quick video to show you how easy it is to grab the embed codes on any video, categorize content and distribute that content to specific user groups. This is just the first step towards a new series of incredible features that we’ll be rolling out over the course of the next 2 months.

We ♥ New Ventures

Over the past couple weeks we’ve been competing in a province wide competition called New Ventures BC and it’s been a terrific experience. For companies/startups in other parts of British Columbia we highly recommend this competition as it’s a great way of getting exposure, practicing your pitch, and connecting with an awesome network of up and coming companies. Check out the interview that our CEO, Stuart Bowness, did with BCIC for more details.

Out of a massive pool of companies competing for the top 3 placements within the Province of British Columbia we are thrilled to be acknowledged as a finalist taking home 3rd place within the province and are full of gratitude for the really generous cash prize that we’ve been given. We’ll be putting the money towards some new awesome technical pieces we’ve got cooking in our labs and can’t wait for the next competition. Thanks to everyone who helped us along the way, it’s been a solid 2 months of fun!

The MediaCore WordPress plugin

The work on our new WordPress plugin is finished! Any MediaCore user can now easily embed any publicly accessible videos on their site into WordPress. The plugin allows you to browse all available media, search, and embed into your WordPress pages and posts. You can install this plugin from the WordPress Plugin Directory or download it directly here.

New feature: User search

We’ve just introduced a new feature in MediaCore that allows you to search for a specific user within your list of users in the administrative control panel. For large sites with thousands of active users this will enable administrators to manage various accounts quickly and easily.
